The Local Area

Vienne department (86), in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region

The campsite is just a 5 minute walk from the village of Chalandray.  In the village, we have a wonderful boulangerie selling fresh croissants,  baguettes and pastries, a Spar shop where you can buy all your essentials and which includes post office and tabac services as well as a bar / restaurant,  takeaway, hairdressers and beauty salon.  For more choice, the nearest supermarket is Super U in Vouillé, a 10/15 minute drive.

The surrounding region has much to offer old and young alike, with the relatively flat landscape ideal for walking and cycling. There are many official walking routes around the village: you can download the maps here. If you are a keen cyclist, La Velo Francette running from Caen to La Rochelle passes through Parthenay, close to the campsite.

At only 20 minutes away, we are ideally situated for a visit to one of the most popular theme parks in France.  Futuroscope is a fantastic theme park packed with virtual reality rides and a stunning evening show. There’s also the wonderful Puy de Fou just over an hour away – well worth a visit!

If golf is your passion, Golf de Forges is only 15 minutes away and also one of the largest golf courses in the country is just 39 km away near Loudun. If you prefer horses, Le Cadre Noir de Saumur National Horse Centre is an hour away in Saumur.

Children will love La Vallee des Singes at Romagne; Terre de Dragons, Indoor Crocodile Centre at Civaux; and Les Geants du Ciel at Chauvigny, where you can also explore the castle or try out the Velorail: a unique rail bike. It’s great fun.

If you are looking for history and culture, the vibrant city of Poitiers with its picturesque medieval centre is only a half hour drive away. Saumur, Chinon and Tours along the Loire Valley are all within easy reach so you can spend a day exploring the chateaux or sampling the wines at the local vineyards.
With so much beautiful countryside to explore and so many attractions in the Poitou-Charentes area, the problem will be deciding what to do!

“We stayed for a week in one of their Bell Tents. It was decked out with everything we needed. There was a BBQ and a shared outdoor kitchen that saved us buying stuff in order to cook. The location and the weather was perfect, and having a well maintained pool was a major plus. Everyone that we met at the campsite was warm and friendly too, which really added to the whole experience. I haven’t slept in a tent since Reading festival in 1995, so I was thinking I was going to rough it for a week. I was totally wrong – the facilities were spotless, showers warm, toilets all stocked with loo roll and access to hand sanitiser was available throughout the campsite. We had an amazing time. The kids had friends to play with, we had good company throughout the night and day. I can’t thank Henry and Kat enough. 2020 has been a rubbish year for everyone, and this holiday has brought back a bit of normality – if only for a week. But it was needed. So, thank you Camping du Bois de Saint Hilaire for bringing the Findlaters that silver lining, that we have craved. This place ticked every box. Till the next time, stay safe and keep it up!”

“Me, my wife and my 14 year old daughter had an amazing stay at this little gem of a site. Super friendly owners who could not be more helpful. The site has everything you need for a relaxing break. We were only stopping for 4 nights but could have quite easily cancelled our next booking to stay longer. The swimming pool was perfect, the bar was great, the pizza’s fab, the pitches were huge and could easily have got 2 camper vans and awnings in them with space to spare but it was nice to just spread out in your own area. Fresh bread and pastries delivered to site 6 days a week, local boulangerie and shop in walking distance along with other services we didn’t need but knew were available if needed was most welcome.
We cannot wait to be able to get back next year with the rest of the family and spend even longer. Just don’t go here if you are expecting a Haven/Butlins/Centre Parcs type experience because it’s just a chillout, family friendly, laid back experience where they are not trying to suck the cash out of you at every opportunity. In summary a very honest campsite, that is not over commercialised, big on getting the basics right and perfect for the majority of people’s needs.”

“We came here for a night and ended up staying 5 days and only left as we had an appointment. This is one of the best campsites we have stayed in. The owners Henry and Kat are wonderful. Not only a good site for us but perfect too for our dogs with the shaded walks. We definitely will be back for another stay”
